Constance “Connie” Foulkes, 97, Bridge Player, Dog Lover, and Sports Enthusiast
Born April 1, 1915 in Brooklyn, New York. She was an only child, the daughter of Fred and Ruth (Knox) Klee. Connie died on Sunday, May 20.
She and her late husband, Clarence R. Foulkes, built a home in New London and retired to it in 1972. Clarence died in 1998. She leaves her two sons, Fred and Roger, and their wives, Graceann and Karen, and three grandsons, Creighton, Harris, and Christopher.
Connie graduated from Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn and worked for a number of organizations, including the Laymen’s National Committee, prior to raising the family.
After her marriage, and the birth of her first son, she and Clarence moved to Floral Park, New York. Completing the family with the birth of another son, they lived there for 30 years. Constance’s Mother, a school teacher, summered in North Sutton, NH and then New London, NH and introduced her daughter and her family to the Lakes Region. They initially stayed on Kezar Lake in North Sutton and then rented on Little Lake Sunapee before building their retirement home in New London.
Connie loved her family, her home (with its wonderful views of Kearsarge Mountain), dogs (especially mutts and strays), bridge, the Red Sox, the Patriots, the Celtics, and Fox News. An honorary member of the Lake Sunapee Country Club, she played golf until her early nineties. In 1984 she and Clarence were founders of the Kearsarge Community Presbyterian Church. They also participated in Meals on Wheels and were active volunteers in the New London community. While she enjoyed winters in Englewood, Florida for over 35 years, New London was the community that she dearly loved.
Remembrances in her memory may be made to either the Kearsarge Community Presbyterian Church, 82 King Hill Road New London, NH 03257, or the Upper Valley Humane Society, 300 Old Route 10, Enfield, NH 03748.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at the Kearsarge Community Presbyterian Church at 11AM on Saturday, June 9. Burial will be private and arrangements are by Chadwick Funeral Service.
