JOHNSON, RICHARD ALLEN

Richard “Dick” Johnson, 83, a long time resident of Melbourne, FL and Islamorada, FL, passed peacefully Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Woodcrest Village, New London, NH.

Born in Melrose, MA on January 8, 1929, Dick was the son of E. Daniel and Hazel Johnson. Dick graduated from Brown and Nichols School in Cambridge, MA in 1947 and Colby College in Waterville, ME in 1951.

He was a Veteran of the Korean War during which time he served in the Counter Intelligence Corp. Following the war, Dick was a reporter for The Boston Globe, Boston Herald and Boston Post and later filled Management positions at Wonderland Dog Track in Revere, MA and Rockingham Park in Salem, NH. The last 30 years of Dick’s career were spent as a Real Estate Developer and Residential Builder.

Following his retirement, he lived aboard his fishing trawler, The Skolpadda, and fished and roamed the Florida waters, making many friends at various marinas he frequented. Dick was an avid fly fisherman, reader, writer and raconteur. He was a fun and devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He will be missed terribly by all who knew and loved him.

Dick was predeceased by his wife, Cela Johnson, and his son, Joshua Johnson. Dick is survived by his son, E. Daniel Johnson II of Camden, ME; his daughter, Neall Johnson and her husband, Steve Johnson, of Wilmot, NH; five grandchildren; Matt Gorevan and his wife Sara, of Steamboat Springs, CO; Richard Cory Johnson of Durham, NH; Hannah Johnson, Wilmot, NH; Sam Johnson; Wilmot, NH; Joshua Chase Johnson Jr, Sarasota, FL; his sister, Nancy Head, of Amherst, NH and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family suggests Memorial Donations be made to Lake Sunapee VNA and Hospice, P.O. Box 2209, New London, NH 03257. A graveside service will be held this summer at Pine Grove Cemetery, Manchester, NH. Details will be determined at a later date.
