New London, NH-Barbara (Fitts) Styles Stevens, 91, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2012 at the William P. Clough Extended Care Center where she had been a resident for nearly five years.
Born in Claremont, NH on July 9, 1920, she was the daughter of Florence (Wheeler) and Bryan Fitts. She was married in 1943 to Reynold S. Styles, a professor at Proctor Academy and later at Colby Junior College, who predeceased her in 1977. In 1979 she married James R. Stevens, a retired business man who died in 1999. She was also predeceased in 1987 by her sister, Merrilou London. She is survived by her brother, Duane (Janice) Fitts of Kent, OH and Sunapee, NH, in addition to many nieces and nephews whom she adored.
In her early years Barbara enjoyed an active and productive life. For over 30 years she served as an administrative secretary to four presidents at Colby Junior College before it became Colby-Sawyer College named for the first president she served. Barbara referred to this period of time as “her distinct pleasure to bridge four administrations at a college that she loved”. She was also responsible for the development and management of the college book store as well as the student alumni fund.
Following her retirement she was appointed Colby Alumni Director. Barbara was also an active member of the New London Community. For two years she managed the Home Décor store and was a member of the New London Chamber of Commerce. She was a past president of the New London Garden Club and was the recipient of the Silver Award from the NH State Garden Club. She was instrumental in the development of the Antique Show and the New London Home Tours. Barbara was especially proud of her 50+ membership in the DAR from which she received special state recognition. Following her retirement from Colby she also served two terms as Recorder for the NH Senate.
For over 20 years Barbara wintered at her condo at Bear’s Paw in Naples, FL where she was also actively involved in the community and charitable functions. She was an avid golfer.
At Barbara’s request there will be no public memorial service. A private graveside service will be held in West Part Cemetery, New London, NH. Memorial contributions may be made to The First Baptist Church Deacon’s Fund, P.O. Box 336, or to the New London Garden Club, P.O. Box 1772, both New London, NH 03257. Chadwick Funeral Service of New London, NH is assisting the family with arrangements.
